Mother Always Said You Should…

My Mom used to tell me repeatedly to do this and do that, not to do this and not to do that.  ALL, I recall, very valuable advice. Looking back on it, I can say she was, and still is, a very wise woman. 

Time reveals, in fact, just about every caring Mother is a Wise Woman.  I can see why we carve out a special day each year to acknowledge Mothers.  So here is a shout out to all Mom’s – Happy Mothers Day!! 

And not to be outdone, my Mothers Birthday is May 27^th which somehow seems to fall on or very close to Mothers Day each year.  So, she gets double the hugs and appropriate accolades every May from my Brother and me. 

Unfortunately, My Mom’s Mom is no longer here.  I am sure that makes her very sad this time of year.  I am sure some reading this can relate and have similar stories.  For ALL those whose Mom is no longer with us, may you remember the best about them. In addition to that, there are also many who never knew their Mom due to unfortunate circumstance. I bet someone played that roll in their life and they too deserve a Happy Mother’s Day!

Regardless, we can celebrate this Mothers Day knowing Moms both here and no longer here are special in more ways than we can count. 

Especially the Mom’s who are sitting right now by their Child’s hospital bed not too far from where I type this…

 Why I Support

I grew up right here in Oshawa.  Born in Oshawa General Hospital.  I remember when I first heard about a young person close to our family suffering from a nasty disease that was granted A Wish from Children's Wish Foundation .  This was the turning point in this persons recovery. It was then that I began to pay closer attention to the work they do.  Since then, I have learned that it is a collection of hard working professionals all coming together for a common cause.  That cause is to help young people over come unfortunate health issues that life sometimes throws our way.  I take pride in supporting in a way that I can, the good work these people do at Make A Wish .  My team rally’s around our annual goal of raising money and donating portions of our income to help Make A Wish in their quest to heal young people when they need healing.  My team and I are committed to providing outstanding results for buyers and sellers referred to us by our past clients.   I have discovered that Make A Wish shares similar commitments to their patients.  And since their services survive on sponsorships and donations we are happy to contribute and proud to support them.

Ashley's day with the Toronto Blue Jays

Ashley is an ambitious and talented 14-year-old. She is the MVP of her baseball team, a pianist, one belt away from obtaining her black belt in Karate, and an extraordinary artist. Ashley was diagnosed with Takayasu arteritis, a disorder that causes blood vessel inflammation, a year before her wish was granted. Though her condition has changed her life, it hasn’t stopped her from chasing her big dreams.

When we asked Ashley about her one true wish, she knew she wanted a unique experience that she would never forget: she wanted to meet her favourite Toronto Blue Jays baseball player, Kevin Pillar.

Ashley’s wish would soon come true, but to reveal the big news about what was in store, her family, friends and Make-A-Wish® volunteer wish grantors threw her a surprise party. It was a wonderful start to Ashley’s wish experience and her loved ones were thrilled to join in the celebration.

A few days before she was to meet Kevin Pillar, Ashely and her family were picked up at their home in Guelph, Ontario by a limousine and taken to the Renaissance Toronto Downtown Hotel. There, they enjoyed a suite overlooking the Rogers Centre. As they arrived at their room, the Blue Jays were winning their game and Ashley was excited for what was to come.

The following day, after some sightseeing around Toronto, Ashley had her chance to meet Kevin Pillar and played catch with him before his game. Kevin was happy to spend time with Ashley and her family and he left her with the ultimate souvenir - a signed baseball bat that said, “I am now your biggest fan!” Kevin invited Ashley to throw out the ceremonial first pitch and we’re pretty sure Ashley was the team’s good luck charm that night because they won their game. It was a perfect ending to the day Ashley had been looking forward to since she first made her wish.

When asked what her favourite part of the wish experience was, Ashley said, “I liked playing catch with Kevin Pillar. He told me to go stand in ‘his spot’ in centre field and he threw me pop flies.” This was a dream come true for this Blue Jays superfan.

Thank you to Kevin Pillar and the Toronto Blue Jays for your generosity in hosting Ashley at the Rogers Centre for the day of her wish. Thanks also to the Sony Canada Charitable Foundation for donating a Sony Cyber-shot digital camera to Ashley so she could capture special moments during her experience.
